A few months ago we wrote about registration details for the classic Spring Lake 5 race. The event has long since sold out, and now the day of the race is in sight. The website all the race details, but here is the schedule of events, from the Spring Lake 5 website:

[Update, May 28, 11:30 a.m.: See 2016 Spring Lake 5 results]
Friday May 27:
> 6:00 pm Kids Races (Start line Ocean & Atlantic Avenues)
> 10 am to 8 pm PM Packet Pickup for SL5 at the Spring Lake train station.
Saturday May 28:

The official race instruction sheet notes that parking in the race area is limited, and suggests that you arrive early to find a spot. Also, "Streets east of Third Avenue will by closed at 7:30 a.m. to parking." And Ocean Avenue will be completely closed to traffic at the start and finish areas on the morning of the race, so don't even think of driving in those areas.

Entrants can pick up t-shirts today at the Spring Lake train station (Warren Avenue near Fifth Avenue) on Thurs. from 12-2 and 4-7p.m., and Friday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

There are four water stops on the course (on both sides of the street), in addition to the water at the start and finish.

Good luck to all participating in the 40th running of the Spring Lake 5!

2015 Spring Lake 5 - Race Registration Info - Opens Feb. 1st!

2014 Spring Lake 5 start
The scene before the start of the 2014 Spring Lake 5. See how to register for the 2015 race below.

Yes, it's frigid in the Garden State today, but summer can't be that far away: registration for the 2015 Spring Lake 5 begins in just over 12 hours. As always, the race takes place Saturday morning of Memorial Day weekend, which this year is May 23rd.

Once again, the best method to apply is through online registration, and it starts at 5 a.m. Eastern time Sunday morning, Feb. 1st. Apparently, there's no special early period for previous years' participants to register, so it's everybody into the pool at 5 a.m., first come, first serve. Registration will close when the capacity of 12,500 is reached (and it won't take long).

See more the website for more Spring Lake 5 registration details.

Go to http://runsignup.com/springlake5 at 5 a.m. to register. The entry fee for the five-mile race is
$40 (plus a $2.50 sign-up fee) and includes a 100% cotton, heavyweight t-shirt. You can also upgrade to a technical, wicking shirt ($46).

There are also kids' races for $15. Registration for this also begins at 5 a.m. on Feb. 1st.

Good luck, and see you at the Jersey Shore on May 23rd!

2012 Spring Lake 5 - Race Results

Race results are here for the 2012 Spring Lake 5. One of the most popular races in New Jersey, the annual Spring Lake 5 is held each year on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend. The race has been held each year since 1977 and always fills up fast (this isn't the first year I've gotten shut out by not registering soon enough).

This year's SL5 was held in appropriately summery weather; the race website says it was sunny and 76 degrees with 69% humidity at the start of the race.

The race attracts thousands of runners to Spring Lake for a course that begins and ends right near the boardwalk. For many casual runners, the race is a good excuse to gather at the Jersey Shore for a day (or night, or weekend) of partying.

Registration for the Spring Lake 5 opens in February; check the race's website early next year to find out when registration opens so you can get in on the 2013 race.

2010 Spring Lake 5 - General Registration Opens Feb. 12th

NOTE: Entry to 2010 Spring Lake 5 is now filled, but you can still get into the race by signing up to raise money through one of the race's charity partners.
- - - - -
Most of the spots in the 2010 Spring Lake 5 mile race have been filled, but the remaining slots will be open starting on Friday morning, Feb. 12th at 5:00 a.m. - yes, that's what the Spring Lake 5 Web site says. Early registration opened to those who had run the race before, and the Web site says that that quota (7,000 participants) has been reached.

Another 2,500 participants will be added through the general registration that beings Feb. 12th. So what about the extra 500 slots to make up the 10,000-runner field? I'm guessing those are reserved for people who sign up to run the Spring Lake 5 to benefit a charity.

As always, the Spring Lake 5 will take place the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend, which this year is May 29th. The race starts at 8:30 a.m. at Ocean and Sussex Avenues in Spring Lake, New Jersey.

2009 Spring Lake Five - Race Results

It seems as if the race held up and the 2009 Spring Lake Five race is in the books. Unfortunately I had to miss the race this year... the race was closed by the time I tried to enter (back in February).

Anyway, here is the link for the 2009 Spring Lake Five race results. As of half past noon on Saturday, the fields are empty, but at least the page is up already, so you can check back later.

For more information on the race, check the Spring Lake Five home page.

Wish I was there... right now I'd be at Kelly's having a post-race sligo and a Long Island iced tea with my friends.

2008 Spring Lake 5 - Race Results

The 2008 Spring Lake 5 was held May 24th, and the results page is up here.

NOTE: The site says these are unofficial results, and the men's results in particular seem to be incomplete (I ran the race with several friends, and none of us are listed in the race results). This might be because apparently the first male finisher was wearing a women's bib number, the site says.

Check the link above later and with any luck the results will be made final soon.

About 9,000 runners took part in the 2008 SL5, which was held on a beautiful day at the Jersey Shore: warm but not too warm, clear skies, and no rain!
