2014 Newport 10K - Race Results

Today's Newport 10K wasn't just an exciting race through city streets in the shadow of New York City and the Statue of Liberty, it was the USATF-NJ men's and women's open 10K championship. The official results are listed here, where you can view them in their entirety or search for particular runners.

The top male and overall winner was Haile Mengesha of New York City, coming in just under 20 minutes with a time of  29:59. The women's winner was Julie Culley of Lebanon, NJ in 33:47.

Congrats to all runners who sped through the streets of Jersey City this morning!

2013 Rock & Roll Brooklyn 10K - Race Results Posted

It was a glorious, cool morning in Brooklyn for the 2013 Rock & Roll Brooklyn 10K. [UPDATE: As of 1:30 p.m. Sat., 2013 race results are up at the link shown!] As of 1 p.m. Saturday, the Brooklyn 10K results page only shows results for 2012 and 2011, but it seems that results for 2013 will be posted there when they are ready.

You could check this results page regularly if you want to find your race time, but a more efficient way might be to check the Rock & Roll series Twitter page (@runrocknroll) or the Brooklyn 10K's Facebook page.

The 2013 Rock & Roll Brooklyn 10K took place in the borough's famed Prospect Park. Good job, finishers! It's a great day to be outside... go out and explore Brooklyn!

2011 Prospect Park Turkey Trot - Race Results

Here you'll find race results for the Prospect Park Track Club 5M Turkey Trot, held yesterday morning in Brooklyn. Each year hundreds of people start their Thanksgiving morning with a brisk five-mile jaunt in Prospect Park, and this year was no exception. The 2011 race featured more than 2,000 finishers, in fact.

2011 Beach to Beacon 10K - Results

The 14th TD Bank Beach to Beacon 10K took place today in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, and you can find the results here. You'll see the top 10 male and finishers on this page, with links to other results.

2011 Newport 10K (Newport 10,000) - Race Results

Somehow I didn't realize that the Newport 10K was taking place this weekend until it was over... unfortunate since this is a local race for me, and has some great scenery. In any case, here you'll find the race results for the 2011 Newport 10K (also called the Newport 10,000). This year's race was held yesterday, May 7th in and around the Newport area of Jersey City and along the waterfront.

It may have been a bit warmer than runners would have liked yesterday, but it certainly cooler than some temps the area has seen in early May in recent years.

The Newport 10K has a flat, fast course, which is probably one of the reasons is was chosen as the USATF-NJ men's and women's 10K championship race. I'll be checking to see if some people I know set PRs.

Cooper River Bridge Run 2010 - Saturday, March 27th

Tomorrow is the day for the popular Cooper River Bridge Run in Charleston, South Carolina. The event features a 10K and a kids' run, and the field for the 10K is filled at more than 38,000 participants. The Cooper River Bridge Run is known for its course, which crosse the two-and-a-half-mile Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge.

Beach to Beacon 2010 - Registration Opens March 13th

General registration for the 2010 Beach to Beacon 10K race opens tomorrow, Saturday March 13th, at 8 a.m. EST. The Beach to Beacon race takes place on August 7th in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. Registration for Cape Elizabeth residents only is now closed (they had a 24-hour window in which they could register before anyone else).

If you get shut out because the race has reached capacity, there's always the lottery. As the site says:

"[Lottery] Registration Opens when capacity is reached and closes Sunday, March 21 at Midnight EST. Lottery winners will be chosen Monday, March 22, 2010 and notified via email."

The Nike Human Race is Back for 2009

It turns out Nike is returning for a second edition of its worldwide Nike Human Race 10K this year, and the date is October 24th. With August nearing an end and no word of the event, I'd been assuming Nike wasn't holding the event, which was a combination of a series of formal races around the world and many more run-your-own-10K individual events.

Here is an excerpt from a Nike press release (from TriathlonTraining.net):

"Nike-hosted Human Race events will be held in more than 24 cities from New York City to Los Angeles, Buenos Aires to Rome. Through Nikeplus.com, however, every city and every road can become a race day course. By combining the virtual running world with the physical, the Nike+ Human Race is open to anyone, anywhere. Race registration opens August 18 on Nikeplus.com. By registering, runners will be able to participate in one of several Nike-hosted events or choose to run where they are on race day."

This year's Human Race seems to be scaled down significantly from last year's. And of the 24 cities, only three are in the United States: New York City; Columbus, Ohio; and Los Angeles.

The 2009 New York Nike Human Race takes place in Brooklyn's Prospect Park, starting at 8 a.m. This has got to be an improvement over last year's chaotic race on Randall's Island, which featured running across sites that were under construction and, at one point, coming to a complete halt as runners hit a bottleneck waiting to run over a narrow bridge.

Maybe Nike realized it bit off more than it could chew last year and decided to pare down this year's events for logistical as well as economic issues.

2009 Beach to Beacon 10K - Registration Open Now

Registration opened at 12 p.m. today for the 2009 Beach to Beacon 10K in Maine (August 1st). Although the field has been increased to 6,000, the organizers say they expect to reach that limit in the first 24 hours. Registration is available online only.

The kids' race takes place Friday, July 31st.

Founded by Olympic marathon champion (and Maine native) Joan Benoit Samuelson, the Beach to Beacon 10K starts in Cape Elizabeth and ends at Portland Head Light.

The Nike Human Race - Give Your Results and Reactions

I've gotten an unprecedented amount of traffic to and comments on my post about running in the New York edition of the Nike Human Race. Most of the comments had the same reaction as I did to the Randall's Island course... namely, that it was congested and just plain awful.

Who out there ran the Nike Human Race in the other 26 cities? What was your experience with the race? Was the course well planned and runner friendly?

To answer one of the comments about the New York Human Race, it was not a New York Road Runners Club event, as far as I can tell. The NYRR promoted the race on its site, but clicking on a link for the race led you straight to Nike's site for the Human Race. So I don't think NYRR can be blamed for the poorly planned course.

Nike Human Race - Finding Results and Winners

The first-ever worldwide Nike Human Race is complete (or still in progress in some places), and Nike is beginning to post the results. You can find the Nike Human Race results by city on an interactive map. The site also offers a leaderboard showing the fastest times for all the Nike Human Race events... that's races in 26 cities around the world.

As of midnight eastern time, the map shows "awaiting results" for the race I ran in, the New York City event. The weather was beautiful, the post-race concert by the All-American Rejects was fun, and the final lap inside Icahn Stadium at Randall's Island was a great way to finish.

The race course itself, however, was abysmal... probably the worst course I've ever experienced in nearly 30 years of running races. Randall's Island is not a huge island, making it necessary for runners to complete two loops of the course. Not a problem with a decent course, but this one was awful. In many places the course was narrowed too much by fences, and it had the runners going over construction areas with potentially tricky footing.

The narrow course became even more narrow when the race staff asked (politely) runners to stay to the left so that front runners making their second loop could get by.

At one point the runners had to run over a short bridge over a stream that was only wide enough for four or five people running abreast. Imagine hundreds of people trying to cross that bridge at once, with thousands just behind them, and it's easy to understand why I and many other runners were literally standing in place for several minutes until I could cross the bridge.

If the Nike Human Race is to be run again in New York City, a major course (and/or location) redesign is absolutely necessary.

One-Million Runners Set to Run the Nike Plus Human Race

Nike is gearing up to have one million runners around the world run in an event it is calling the "Nike Plus Human Race." There are actual organized races in major cities including New York, Los Angeles, Madrid, Buenos Aires, and London, and many more running on their own. The race is a 10K.

You can find out all the details at the link above, and register to take part in the Nike Plus Human Race. In New York City, the race will start at 6 p.m. on Randall's Island, just east of Manhattan.

2008 Crescent City Classic 10K - Race Results Posted
