Meb Keflezighi Wins 2009 New York Marathon - First American Winner Since 1982

Meb Keflezighi, whose family fled war-ravaged Eritrea and came to the U.S., today became the first American man to win the New York City Marathon since 1982. Pointing to the "U.S.A." emblazoned on his shirt, Keflezighi broke the tape at 2:09:15, a full 40 seconds ahead of second-place finisher, Kenya’s Robert Cheruiyot.

Amid all the usual hand-wringing about the dismal state of American distance running, Keflezighi provided a shining bright spot, but was far from the only American who did well. In fact, the U.S. had its best showing in NYC Marathon in 30 years: Ryan Hall finished fourth, and overall six Americans finished in the top 10.

I was volunteering at the aid station at Mile 25 and was pretty exciting when I saw that Meb was the first man to pass that point. But it wasn't until later in the afternoon that I found out that he indeed had won. From what I've read, Meb ran a great strategic race, and I hope to catch it on tape delay or on the Internet soon.

Keflezighi had tears streaming down his face after he crossed the finish line. “U.S.A. gave me all the opportunity in the world, education, sports, lifestyle,” Keflezighi said in a quote on the New York Times's Web site. “This is so special to me.” Today's victory is his first in a major marathon. He finished second in New York in 2004. Also that year, he achieved a second place finish in the Olympic marathon in Athens, Greece, winning the silver medal.

Keflezighi and his 10 siblings left war-torn Eritrea, settling in San Diego in 1987. He became a U.S. citizen in 1997.

Congrats to Meb on his well-deserved victory in winning the 2009 New York City Marathon, to Ryan Hall and the other Americans who placed in the top 10, and to all finishers!

2009 Grete's Great Gallop Race Results (Norwegian Festival), Central Park

If you didn't get to check your results posted in Central Park this morning, or you want to see where you stacked up against the field, you can see the results of the 2009 Grete's Great Gallop half-marathon here. (I didn't see my results in the Park because, well, I was pretty far down in the results and they hadn't posted that page yet. On the plus side, I hadn't run a half in several years and really had no business running one in the shape I'm in, but it was good to get it in the books.)

The weather held up for the race (running 13.1 miles in the rain is no fun at all), and the Norwegian hosts of the festival once again plied visitors with bagels with lox and cream cheese and those tasty waffles with berries. And Grete Waitz herself was again on hand, looking great for someone who had cancer a few years ago. Long may she run!

RESULTS - 2009 Tunnel to Towers Run, Brooklyn to Manhattan - Sept. 27th

RESULTS AVAILABLE: Update 9/28: Tunnel to Towers results have been posted here. You can search for individual runners or view results by category.

- - - - -
Today the 2009 Tunnel to Towers Run, from Brooklyn to Manhattan, was held under rainy skies. The race commemorates the journey of FDNY firefighter Stephen Siller, who on 9/11/01 ran from his firehouse in Brooklyn through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the World Trade Center, where he died when the towers collapsed. After the race there is a festival with food and entertainment, which is probably a bit subdued by the weather today.

See the official 2009 Tunnel to Towers Run Web site for news of street closures, the foundation that benefits from the race, and of course race results, which will be posted later. For Tunnel to Towers race results from last year's event, see here.

The Nike Human Race is Back for 2009

It turns out Nike is returning for a second edition of its worldwide Nike Human Race 10K this year, and the date is October 24th. With August nearing an end and no word of the event, I'd been assuming Nike wasn't holding the event, which was a combination of a series of formal races around the world and many more run-your-own-10K individual events.

Here is an excerpt from a Nike press release (from TriathlonTraining.net):

"Nike-hosted Human Race events will be held in more than 24 cities from New York City to Los Angeles, Buenos Aires to Rome. Through Nikeplus.com, however, every city and every road can become a race day course. By combining the virtual running world with the physical, the Nike+ Human Race is open to anyone, anywhere. Race registration opens August 18 on Nikeplus.com. By registering, runners will be able to participate in one of several Nike-hosted events or choose to run where they are on race day."

This year's Human Race seems to be scaled down significantly from last year's. And of the 24 cities, only three are in the United States: New York City; Columbus, Ohio; and Los Angeles.

The 2009 New York Nike Human Race takes place in Brooklyn's Prospect Park, starting at 8 a.m. This has got to be an improvement over last year's chaotic race on Randall's Island, which featured running across sites that were under construction and, at one point, coming to a complete halt as runners hit a bottleneck waiting to run over a narrow bridge.

Maybe Nike realized it bit off more than it could chew last year and decided to pare down this year's events for logistical as well as economic issues.

NY Road Runners Father's Day 5 Mile Run - Race Results

You can find the race results for the 2009 Father's Day 5 Mile Run here. You can search the results by name or bib number or view results by gender, age group, team, and other options.

Despite the relentless rain in the New York area over the last few weeks, runners lucked out and there was just a light sprinkle during the race.

My time was 45:39, which is probably my best five-mile time in a while. Not where I want to be, but going in the right direction.

Kara Goucher, Bryan Hall Finish 3rd in Boston Marathon

Americans Kara Goucher and Bryan Hall both finished in third place in today's 113th Boston Marathon. Goucher was in the lead pack most of the way and was leading late in the race, but Salina Kosgei of Kenya and Dire Tune of Ethiopia passed her in the last mile, with Kosgei pulling out a thrilling finish by one second. The times: Kosgei 2:32:16; Tune 2:32:17; Goucher 2:32:25. Goucher didn't win, but she sure ran a gutsy race.

The men's race was not nearly as close, to put it mildly. Ethiopia's Deriba Merga finished first in 2:08:42, with Daniel Rono of Kenya a full 50 seconds behind. Ryan Hall finished at 2:09:40.

Here is the Boston Marathon top finishers list.

2009 Peachtree Road Race... Trouble Getting on ajc.com/peachtree Resolved

From an article on the Peachtree site:
"Online registration for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Peachtree Road Race, which opened at 7 a.m. Sunday, is continuing after initial technical issues.

Those issues were resolved shortly after 9 a.m., according to the Atlanta Track Club, and registration is proceeding until 45,000 entries have been received."

2009 Austin Marathon Results (Yes, For Real)

As you've probably figured out, the Austin Marathon site has been inaccessible the whole day. Here is a site you can find the results of today's marathon: http://results.active.com/pages/page.jsp?eventID=1544913&pubID=3

The Austin Marathon site, www.youraustinmarathon.com, is still down, but it now redirects to a Marathons of Texas Web site, which includes the Active.com results link above. That Web site also says "For questions please call the race hotline, 512.476.7223."

2009 Austin Marathon - Web Site Not Responding

I'm sure a lot of people are trying to find out results or information about the 2009 Austin Marathon ... and aren't getting it. The marathon has a new Web site, www.youraustinmarathon, and it is apparently inaccessible due to heavy volume.

I'll keep trying to log onto it and post any link I can find to the results page.

Kara Goucher Wins Women's Mile at the Millrose Games

Native New Yorker Kara Goucher won the elite women's mile at the 2009 Millrose Games at New York's Madison Square Garden Friday night. Goucher, known more as a distance runner, essentially got in a good speed workout as she trains for this spring's Boston Marathon.

Winning the mile at the 102nd Millrose Games was another happy homecoming for Kara Goucher. The Queens native finished in third place in last year's New York City Marathon. That was her first marathon, and the highest finish for an American woman in 14 years.

Goucher and her husband Adam, also an American runner, live in Portland, Oregon.
Goucher's time in the mile was 4:33.19, which is her personal best. Fellow American Shayne Culpepper finished fifth in the race with a time of 4:38.92.

(See the complete elite women's Millrose mile results.)

The men's marquee event, the Wanamaker Mile, will be held later Friday night.

The race for Grandma's Marathon 2009 has begun... no, not the actual race (which doesn't take place until June 20th), but the competition to get into this popular midwestern race. According to an article on DL-Online, registration for the 2009 Grandma's Marathon in Duluth, Minnesota opened at a minute after midnight today, January 15th.

The race always fills up, and the article says that the race is half filled after the first 24 hours that registration is open.
