2011 New Year's Eve Runs in Central Park (& Brooklyn)

Kick off the new year with a short run in New York!

If you're looking for a healthy, relatively inexpensive way to kick off the new year in NYC, check out the Emerald Nuts Midnight Run in Central Park. Put on by the New York Road Runners Club, this traditional four-mile race takes place at midnight, but the fun starts at 10 p.m. with an outdoor dance party (with DJ) near the bandshell in the park. (There's a race in Brooklyn, too; see information below.)

Runners are encouraged to dress in costume, and there's a costume parade and contest at 11 p.m. The race itself goes off at 12 Midnight, with fireworks to ring in the new year.

I ran the race for the first time last year, and it was a lot of fun. (Speaking of fun, this is a "fun run," so results will not be posted on the NYRR website). Registration is $45 for members and $50 for non-members until 12/30; on race day, it's $50 members/$55 non-members.

See the Emerald Nuts Midnight Run in Central Park web page for full details.

If you're up for a smaller, more low-key (and cheaper) run, there's a three-mile race in Brooklyn on New Year's Eve. A description from NYC Runs:

"This 3 miler follows an out and back course from 9th Street that heads South towards Coney Island Avenue and turns around at the Lincoln Road Entrance to the Park. Time it just right - just right - and you'll cross the finish line with fireworks bursting in the sky over Grand Army Plaza."

The Brooklyn race starts at 11:15 p.m. and costs $25 through Dec. 30th; $30 on race day.

Happy new year!

Rock & Roll Las Vegas Marathon - [LIVE RESULTS] Course Map & Info, Getting to the Start, & More

*** UPDATE: Find live results of the Rock & Roll Las Vegas Marathon here. ***
- - - - - - - - - - - -
Sin City will have a bit more excitement than usual with today's sold-out Rock & Roll Las Vegas Marathon - Strip at Night, and you can find some must-know details here.

The name is a bit of a misnomer; although the marathon and half marathon do take place in the dark, they are not exactly at "night"—they start soon after the sun goes down.

Both races start and finish at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino.
And, to get pumped up (sorry!) for the Rock & Roll Las Vegas Marathon, you can watch last night's Stiletto Dash for charity.

2011 Prospect Park Turkey Trot - Race Results

Here you'll find race results for the Prospect Park Track Club 5M Turkey Trot, held yesterday morning in Brooklyn. Each year hundreds of people start their Thanksgiving morning with a brisk five-mile jaunt in Prospect Park, and this year was no exception. The 2011 race featured more than 2,000 finishers, in fact.

You can view the overall results or search by name, bib number, etc. To see the results for 2010, see the main Prospect Park turkey trot results page here.

Congrats to all runners in the Prospect Park turkey trot, especially the winners: Angel Confesor for the men (in 26:33) and Christina Argueta for the women (in 29:36).

The Inaugural Brooklyn Marathon - Race Results Posted!

Brooklyn Marathon results were posted around 2 p.m. Monday on the race's website, thebrooklynmarathon.com/results. The inaugural race took place yesterday and more than 350 runners were have said to have run the event.

(Race organizer Steve Lastoe noted in an e-mail that these are unofficial results and that final results will be posted in a couple of days.)

Runners in the inaugural Brooklyn Marathon.

The race, held entirely in Prospect Park, had great representation from local running clubs including Prospect Park Track Club and North Brooklyn Runners. And for a first-time event, things seemed to run quite smoothly.

John Paul (JP) Montes of Brooklyn was the men's winner of the inaugural Brooklyn Marathon with a time of 2:43:13, while Kelly Gillen of Manhattan took the women's division in 3:14:20.

New York Magazine did a nice article on the Brooklyn Marathon with a focus on Montes.

Volunteers handed out fluids, pretzels, and other treats at an aid station.

Based on the turnout and enthusiasm for the race, it seems that NYCRuns, the race director, has a hit on its hands. Here's to many more successful years of the Brooklyn Marathon.

2011 ING New York City Marathon - Race Results

Today's cool, clear weather no doubt led to many PRs in today's New York City Marathon, and you can find your results here. (Note: this results link and some others appear to be working oddly or directing visitors to different pages; apparently there are some quirks as the NYC Marathon folks are updating and populating their results pages.)

American Lauren Fleshman just past the 25-mile mark. The 5,000-meter specialist finished her first marathon in 2:37:22.

Here are some quick links for 2011 NYC Marathon results:
According to the site, demographic information on the finishers will be available tomorrow. For general questions or information, see the ING NYC Marathon home page.

Geoffrey Mutai of Kenya won today's race in a time of 2:05:05, smashing the previous NYC Marathon record by more than two minutes. He broke the tape less than a minute ahead of his countryman Emmanuel Mutai (no relation), who finished in 2:06:28. Meb Keflezighi ran a strong race to finish as the first American in 2:09:13, good enough for sixth place overall.

In the women's division, Mary Keitany of Kenya led most of the race (sometimes by as much as three minutes), but was reeled in by two other finishers and had to settle for third place in a very close finish. The winner was Firehiwot Dado in 2:23:15, with countrywoman Buzunesh Deba coming in close behind at 2:23:19. Keitany's time was 2:23:38.

Kim Smith of Rhode Island was the fifth-place finisher and first American, with a time of 2:25:46.

I had a list of about 15 runners I was hoping to see during the race, but ended up seeing only three of them.

One thing is sure, the temperature in D.C. should be cool on Sunday, which is good for marathon runners. They may have to wear extra layers of clothes at the start, but may well be rewarded with more comfortable running conditions and faster times.

Good luck to all participants in the 36th Marine Corps Marathon!

There are images of finishers' medals with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, but no times, with "Official Results Coming Soon" noted. You might be able to find more information at the 2011 Nike Women's Marathon Facebook page, or at the race's website.

2011 Chicago Marathon - Race Results

Chicago Marathon race results are up here. Though the site says that these are unofficial results, they should at least give a good idea where runners finished.

Despite warm temperatures, the 2011 Chicago Marathon featured some blazing (and record-setting) performances. Moses Mosop of Kenya set a course record with a time of 2:05:38 to win the men's race, and Lilliua Shobukhova of Russia obliterated the competition, winning the women's division by nearly four minutes and even throwing in a sprint at the end to finish in 2:18:30. It was her third straight Chicago Marathon win.

Congrats to all finishers. If you ran today's Chicago Marathon, what did you think of the race? Were the conditions tough? And were there enough fluids at the aid stations?

Inaugural Brooklyn Marathon Nearly Full

Registration is filling up fast for the first-ever Brooklyn Marathon on Nov. 20th.

Fewer than 20 spots remain open for the inaugural Brooklyn Marathon in Prospect Park, the race organizers announced on Twitter this morning. The race, which takes place on November 20th, is capped at 250 participants and has about 20 spots.

[UPDATE: See information on the 2012 Brooklyn Marathon, which will be held Nov. 18th.]

It seems a marathon in Brooklyn is an idea whose time has come, based on how quickly the race is filling up. Although the race takes place totally in Prospect Park, the organizers, NYCRUNS, hope to take it out into the streets in future years. (It should be remembered that the first New York City Marathon consisted of four-plus loops of Central Park.)

The Brooklyn Marathon will consist of six full loops of Prospect Park and three lower loops.

Find out more details about the inaugural 2011 Brooklyn Marathon here (including a map of Prospect Park, with a downloadable version). If you aren't planning on running it or can't get in, you can always come out to cheer, or to volunteer.

For runners interesting in knowing the Brooklyn Marathon elevation, I found this map and elevation profile for Prospect Park online. It's designed for a bike-riding course and I can't vouch for its accuracy, but it was supposedly created using a GPS device. Here's another map and elevation profile of Prospect Park.

If you're interested in running the first-ever Brooklyn Marathon, you'll want to register soon.

2011 Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon

You'll find the Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon results at this link. I don't know much about this race, which took place yesterday (October 1st), but a few runners I know of were really excited about it. (The idea of wine, food, and running sounds like a winning combination to me, for sure.)

The race took place at the Disney mega-complex in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. The race was apparently part of a wine and dine weekend. You can find out more about the Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon here.

2011 Tunnel to Towers Run, Brooklyn to Manhattan [RESULTS]

[UPDATE: You can view 2011 NYC Tunnel to Towers results here. The official Tunnel to Towers site doesn't link to this page, but the results seem to be correct; at least I was able to find my own time.]

- - - - - - - - -
The annual Tunnel to Towers run/walk takes place at 9:30 tomorrow morning, Sept. 25th, starting in Brooklyn and going through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to Lower Manhattan. I've written about (and run) the Tunnel to Towers race before, so I'll simply repeat what I said then to explain the idea behind the event:

"The race is in honor of NYC firefighter Stephen Siller, who was off duty on 9/11/01 when he heard of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. He headed to his firehouse to get his gear and head for the fire, and since all tunnels and bridges were closed to traffic after the attacks, Siller ran through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel and to the World Trade Center... wearing his full firefighter gear.

Sadly, Stephen Siller was one of the 343 NYC fireman to lose his life when the twin towers collapsed. But the Siller family has turned this tragedy that honors his memory and provides funds for a number of charities, including burn centers in New York and across the country; the New York Foundling Hospital; education funds for the children of fallen soldiers; and even the sufferers of Hurricane Katrina."

Location: The race starts in Red Hook, Brooklyn, and the race has buses and boats to the Ikea store parking lot, where the registration area and baggage drop-off point is (trucks will transport bags to the finish line area in Manhattan). See the race page here for more information and a map, and see a starting line area map here. Note: they say you'll need to get on line at the bus or boat departure points in Manhattan by 7:30 a.m. There doesn't seem to be any mass transit access to the Ikea, and the starting line is near the entrance of the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel.

As usual, the 5k (approx. 3.1 mile) race ends with a festival near the finish line with food booths, games for kids, and live entertainment, including Forrest Gump and CSI:NY actor Gary Sinise, playing with his Lt. Dan Band.

Check the Tunnel to Towers run frequently asked questions for more information. If you can't make it to the race, you can bid on an auction to benefit the foundation through Sept. 29th, or make a contribution anytime.

Registration for the 2012 Boston Marathon opened Sept. 12th at 10 a.m. Eastern time. The Boston Athletic Association (BAA) has been tweaking its registration system in the last couple of years to address some of the complaints about it, so be sure to read all the rules.

2011 San Francisco Marathon - *RESULTS!* Course Maps, Runner Tracking, More

The 2011 San Francisco Marathon and other races take place July 31st

UPDATE, 7/31: 2011 San Francisco Marathon results are posted here. As you can imagine, the main site, www.thesfmarathon.com, is groaning under heavy traffic, so the Bazu Media site in the previous sentence has been set up to provide race results. You'll  be able to search for specific runners by bib number, etc. and view different race divisions, and see finishing times as well as splits. You can also view the leaders in the San Francisco Marathon, the two half marathons, and the 5K.
- - - - - - - - -

July ends with a bang this year in the city by the bay, as the 2011 San Francisco Marathon takes place on July 31st. Here are some links with handy information if you're taking part in the race, or just watching and cheering people on.

* Registration: The registration page says that the Marathon, Half Marathons, and other races are closed, but then says "There is limited availability in the Full Marathon, 2nd Half Marathon, and Munchkin Kids Race." Since it's unclear whether you can get into the Marathon and the second Half, it might be worth it to check to see if you can still register.

* Runner tracking/athlete alerts: the SF Marathon has a smartphone app for both iPhone and Android, which it says shows the course map, lets you track runners, lets you see comments about the race from social media, and more. 2011 Fairfield Half Marathon - Race Results

It's taken awhile, but the 2011 Fairfield Half Marathon results are finally posted. (Note: the page says these are preliminary results.) You'll find results for previous years of the Fairfield Half here too.

In addition to the preliminary overall Fairfield Half results, the page also gives the age group and police/fire individual and team results. You'll find the results for the 2011 5K race here.

A number of people I know ran the Fairfield Half today and it sounds like it was a challenging race: hills and hot, muggy weather. Congrats to all who made it through the race!

New York City/New Jersey Ironman is a Go for 2012 - Registration Info

[UPDATE: See links and information on the Aug. 11th U.S. Ironman Championship in NYC/NJ.]

* * * * * * * * * * *
There has long been discussion about having an Ironman in New York City, and today it has officially become a reality. An announcement on Ironman.com revealed that the inaugural NYC/NJ triathlon will take place next summer, and that it will be the 2010 Ironman U.S. Championship. The statement said in part:

"World Triathlon Corporation and New York City Triathlon announced today that the 2012 Ironman U.S. Championship will take place on August 11, 2012. This race will be the first-ever Ironman competition to be held in the New York City/New Jersey metropolitan region."

According to the race's site, www.ironmanuschampionship.com, online registration begins June 15th at 12 p.m. Eastern time (see the General Entry page). You'll find maps and descriptions of the 2012 Ironman U.S. Championship course here.

The race will cover 140.6 miles in New York City and nearby areas of New Jersey and NY State. Along with a 2.4-mile swim in the Hudson River, the course will feature a 112-mile bike ride on the scenic Palisades Parkway through Bergen (NJ) and Rockland (NY) Counties and a full marathon that will begin in Fort Lee, NJ and finish in Riverside Park on Manhattan's Upper West Side.

The entry fee for the NYC/NJ Ironman has not yet been set, according to an article from Bloomberg News, but it says that "A typical Ironman race costs $575 to take part in." (The General Entry page above says today that entry fee details are "coming soon.")

This should be an exciting event for the tri-state area, and I'm looking forward to watching or volunteering at the inaugural NYC Ironman. Congrats to all who worked hard to make this event happen.

2011 Reach the Beach Relay (Massachusetts) is Underway

The Massachusetts version of the Reach the Beach relay is now underway. Officially known as The RTB Relay: Wachusett to Westport, the event features teams of varying sizes running 200 miles over a 24-hour period. RTB starts in Princeton, Mass. at the Mount Wachusett Ski Area and concludes at the Horseneck Beach State Reservation in Westport.

I've heard of Reach the Beach a number of times over the years but was never really quite clear what it was all about. This year I know a few people in one of the teams, some I'm taking more of an interest in it. Teams can be up to 12 members, and each member runs three legs in the event. (You can learn some of the basic rules and registration info here, and find a PDF list of RTB Massachusetts teams and start times here].)

You can check for Reach the Beach live results (nothing in as of 12 Noon on May 20th, but check back later for information).

There's also the Reach the Beach New Hampshire relay on Sept. 16th and 17th. (It's sold out, but the site says there are still spots available through charity partners.)

2011 HoHa Classic in Hoboken - Race Results

The rains held up for the 2011 HoHa Classic 5 Mile race in Hoboken, NJ, and you can find the race results here. As always, the course featured several loops along the Hudson River waterfront, with great views of the Manhattan skyline. Unfortunately (to me), the course did not continue along Washington Street for the second year in a row; a shame since that is where most of the spectators used to watch the race.

You can search the HoHa Classic race results by runner number, age group, etc. at the website below. The overall winner of the race was Hoboken's own Jared Tooteu in a time of 27:21 -- a smoking pace of 5:28 per mile. The top women's finisher was Katherine Lennon (also of Hoboken), in a time of 35:00. Congrats to them and to all the other finishers.

I was a spectator at the race this year since I ran a race in Central Park yesterday, and it was a fun change of pace to cheer on the runners... although I was disappointed that there weren't more spectators out there to encourage the competitors.

For more information on the race and on its sponsors, the Hoboken Harriers, see the club's website at HoHa.net.

2011 Pittsburgh Marathon - Race Results

(See information on the 2012 Pittburgh Marathon here.)

You'll find 2011 Dick's Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon race results here. The marathon and other events were held in the City of Bridges today, May 15th. You may see different results options depending on when you visit the site. As of Noon Eastern time, you'll see options for 5K results or Marathon live results. , you may see live results as they come in or the complete results). Clicking through on live results, you'll see search fields that let you locate results for specific runners in the Pittsburgh Marathon, marathon relay, and half marathon.

I heard that rain was forecast for today in Pittsburgh, but I hope that weather report improved, since I can't imagine anything more uncomfortable than running 26 miles in the race.

If you ran the Pittsburgh Marathon or any of the other races today, I hope it was relatively dry, or that you've dried off sufficiently. Now you can put your feet up and check the race results above. Congrats!

2011 Pittsburgh Marathon - Race Info, Course Maps, More

The Pittsburgh Marathon takes place Sunday, May 15th and you find out the information you need to know at the race's website, www.pittsburghmarathon.com. It has details such as final runner instructions, how to track a runner in the race, course maps, course elevation, parking information, a map of the corrals, and more.

You can also follow the Pittsburgh Marathon on Twitter at: @PghMarathon (twitter.com/PghMarathon). The latest update from the race's Twitter account is a reminder that walkers will start at 6 a.m. and runners will begin at 7 a.m. The race organizers advise competitors to get to the race site early to park their cars and avoid congestion.

In addition to the Pittsburgh Marathon, the weekend features a marathon relay, half marathon, and kids' marathon. There's also the Pittsburgh 5K race, which was held Saturday, May 14th.

2011 UAE Healthy Kidney 10K - Race Results

Today was a great day in Central Park for the annual UAE Healthy Kidney 10K, and you'll find the results here. The overcast skies and low-60s temps made for great running weather, and this year's race featured not only a record time for the event, but the fastest 10K time ever run in Central Park!

The winner was Leonard Patrick Komon of Kenya (world record holder for 10K), who ran the race in a time of 27:35, which earned him a total of $45,000 (for the first-place finish and for setting the record).

No matter what time you had, check the results page below to find your exact results. As usual, you can view the race results in several ways: overall listings, gender listing, age group, etc.

The UAE Healthy Kidney 10K is sponsored by the United Arab Emirates in honor of one of its leaders, who came to the U.S. to get treatment for kidney disease. The UAE shows its appreciation in several ways. Besides helping fund the race, the country also makes a large contribution to kidney disease research, and offers some rather appealing prize money -- which no doubt helped attract some of the world-class runners to the event.

How was my time? Um, I ran the race about a half hour slower than Mr. Komon. I was about a minute slower than my last 10K, the Scotland Run.

Check your results below, and congratulations to all finishers of the UAE Healthy Kidney 10K!

2011 Newport 10K (Newport 10,000) - Race Results

[See 2014 Newport 10K race results here!]
- - - - - - - - - -
Somehow I didn't realize that the Newport 10K was taking place this weekend until it was over... unfortunate since this is a local race for me, and has some great scenery. In any case, here you'll find the race results for the 2011 Newport 10K (also called the Newport 10,000). This year's race was held yesterday, May 7th in and around the Newport area of Jersey City and along the waterfront.

It may have been a bit warmer than runners would have liked yesterday, but it certainly cooler than some temps the area has seen in early May in recent years.

The Newport 10K has a flat, fast course, which is probably one of the reasons is was chosen as the USATF-NJ men's and women's 10K championship race. I'll be checking to see if some people I know set PRs.

Big Week for Track & Field: Drake Relays & Penn Relays - Info, Schedules, More

As if it wasn't enough that the New York City Marathon lottery was taking place (today, in fact), this week also marks two of the country's premier (and longest-running) track and field meets: The Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa and the Penn Relays in Philadelphia.

The Penn Relays

The 2011 Penn Relays will take place April 28th to the 30th. Follow them online from Franklin Field at thepennrelays.com (at this site you'll also find a link to a live blog that's updated during the meet results). You can get the schedule and results at pennrelaysonline.com, and view the schedule by day, level (high school, college, etc.), and school, and follow the meet on Twitter at @thePennRelays.

The Drake Relays

The action at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa also takes place April 28th to 30th (though some events began today, and the Grand Blue Mile was held last night). You can find out all about the competitors, the meet schedule, tickets, and more at the Drake University athletics website. Follow Drake Relays updates on Twitter at @DrakeRelays.

You'll find the Drake Relays general meet information here, and the final meet schedule (PDF document) here.

Among the elite athletes competing at the event will be Olympic hurdler Lolo Jones, who is a native of Des Moines. She'll be competing in Saturday's 100-meter hurdles invitational, which she won four straight times from 2005 to 2008. You can follow her from the event at her often-entertaining Twitter page, @FollowLolo.

Tickets for the Drake Relays can be purchased at the Drake University website, GoDrakeBulldogs.com.

2011 Boston Marathon - Searchable Results

Runners have been streaming across the finish line in the 2011 Boston Marathon, and you can find complete searchable Boston Marathon race results here. You can view the overall results; narrow down your search by viewing results by gender, age group, country, etc.; or do a direct search by entering a runner's name or bib number.

For individual results of runners still on the course, check out the Boston Marathon athlete tracker.

The cool conditions have meant fast times, including some record-breakers. There was a new world-best time in the men's marathon by Geoffrey Mutai in 2:03:02. American Ryan Hall came in fourth for the men (with an American-best time), and in the women's race American Desiree Davila finished second after a thrilling back-and-forth battle with Kenyan Caroline Kilel. Kara Goucher came in fifth.

I'm glad to see that my New York area friends are doing well, and they all should be finishing with race results that meet or exceed their Boston Marathon goals.

Congrats to them, and to all the Boston Marathon finishers!
