Run into 2014: New Year's Eve Races in Central Park & Brooklyn

If running a fun, festive race is your idea of kicking off the new year, there are two events in New York City to check out. The Midnight Run in Central Park, put on by the New York Road Runners, is a longstanding annual event that attracts thousands of runners (many in costume) who run four miles in the iconic park, with DJ music and dancing preceding the race and continuing afterwards. (Before the race, there's a contest to judge the best costumes.) A fireworks show takes soon after the start of the race, which takes place at 11:59 p.m.

The Midnight Run isn't sold out as of 24 hours before the event, but you must register in person at the site (no more online registration). Event-day registration is $60 for NYRR members; $65 for non-members.

Over in Brooklyn, NYCRuns is once again holding its New Year's Eve 5K in Prospect Park at 11:15 p.m. It's said to be the only nighttime race all year in the famed Brooklyn park, and includes complimentary hot chocolate, sparkling cider, and other treats. Race-day registration is $40.

2013 Prospect Park Turkey Trot - Race Results

Cold, windy weather couldn't keep hardy souls from coming out to Prospect Park early on Thanksgiving morning to take part in the annual turkey trot. More than 2,200 runners finished this year, marking another advance sellout for the event. (See the 2013 Prospect Park turkey trot results.)


In fact, the five-mile race, put on the the Prospect Park Track Club and sponsored by JackRabbit Sports, sold out two weeks before the event. Brooklyn has become the home of a number of new races in recent years, but the Prospect Park turkey trot remains one of the most popular. Despite the weather, who can pass up the chance to burn off some calories and mingle with friends old and new before sitting down to a day of coma-inducing eating and TV viewing?

If you live in Brooklyn and are looking for some folks to run with, look into becoming a member of the Prospect Park Track Club.

Congrats to all who took part and got their Thanksgiving off to a healthy start (no matter what they may have done afterward).

2013 Brooklyn Marthon - Course Map, Runner Tracking, & More

The Brooklyn Marathon, the first new marathon to be held in NYC in years, celebrates its third edition this Sunday, Nov. 17th, and here is some information you'll want to know whether you're running or watching.

Where's a good place to watch the Brooklyn Marathon and see the lead runners finish? Here's what NYCRuns head honcho Steve Lastoe advised in an email:

Find a spot not far from the South Brooklyn Running Club water station on West Drive and then head to the finish line when the first runners pass by—you should have about 10 minutes. If you need a little more time than that, the North Brooklyn Runners Station on East Drive should do it.

2013 NYC Marathon - RESULTS

The 2013 NYC Marathon went off as planned, getting back on track after its last-minute cancellation last year due to Hurricane Sandy. You can find NYC Marathon results here (unofficial, as of race night).

The 2013 Marine Corps Marathon takes place in Washington, D.C., on Sunday, Oct. 27th, and if you want to track runners in the event, here's are some options for doing it.

2013 Duke City Run - RESULTS, Course Maps, Schedule, & More

Sunday marks the 30th running of the Duke City Marathon.

 It looks like perfect weather on Sunday, Oct. 20th for the 2013 Duke City Marathon and other events in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The 30th annual Duke City Run includes a marathon and half marathon, marathon relay, 20K walk, 10K run, ad 5K run and walk. See the links below for:

All events begin at the corner of Third Street and Tijeras, and end at Third Street between Tijeras and Marquette. A post-race festival will be held at the Civic Plaza from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Most of the races take place in part on the scenic Bosque recreation trail.

2013 Nike Women's Marathon SF- Runner Tracking & More

At this site you can track multiple runners, follow them through the course with an interactive map, and even see the elevation at the point they're running (no small factor in a race that winds its way through the hills of San Francisco).

All you need to track runners is their bib number or last name.

Sunday, Oct. 13th is the 2013 Chicago Marathon. If you want to follow a runner, here's where to find a (rather lengthy) list of FAQs about the process. The bottom line is that Web tracking is closed, but you can track via text by texting the runner's bib number to 21970. Check that FAQ if you want to find more information. (Note: the FAQ says, "You can still track via your mobile phone by texting BIB# to 37619." If one number doesn't work, try the other.)

We'll add info about tracking and results that are available during the race once the event has begun. The Chicago Marathon may offers finish-line video as well.

2013 Rock & Roll Brooklyn 10K - Race Results Posted

It was a glorious, cool morning in Brooklyn for the 2013 Rock & Roll Brooklyn 10K. [UPDATE: As of 1:30 p.m. Sat., 2013 race results are up at the link shown!] As of 1 p.m. Saturday, the Brooklyn 10K results page only shows results for 2012 and 2011, but it seems that results for 2013 will be posted there when they are ready.

You could check this results page regularly if you want to find your race time, but a more efficient way might be to check the Rock & Roll series Twitter page (@runrocknroll) or the Brooklyn 10K's Facebook page.

The 2013 Rock & Roll Brooklyn 10K took place in the borough's famed Prospect Park. Good job, finishers! It's a great day to be outside... go out and explore Brooklyn!

2013 Divas Half Marathon, Long Island - Race Results

2014 Boston Marathon Registration Info: Dates, Notes, Field Size Increase, & More

If you want to get into the 2014 Boston Marathon, the registration date is coming up soon... so you might want to spend part of your Labor Day weekend checking out the details. Here are some basic details, shown after the graphic of qualifying times (you can find full information at the Boston Athletic Association's registration dates page):

2014 Boston Marathon qualifying times.

• Registration for the 2014 Boston Marathon starts September 9, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. ET; it will be conducted online only at www.baa.org
• The registration process will be the same as for 2012 and 2013, allowing faster runners to register first
• Race date: Monday, April 21, 2014
• Field size: for 2014 only, the Boston Marathon field has been increased to 36,000 participants
• Qualifying standards for 2014 (shown above) are the same as for the 2013 race  
• The 2015 Boston Marathon will take place on April 20th; registration dates have not yet been announced. The qualification window for the 2015 race opens on Saturday, September 14, 2013.

On August 17th and 18th one of the world's toughest races will take place: the 2013 edition of the renowned Leadville 100-Mile Run in Colorado. Here is some information to help you be prepared for the race:

The "Race Across the Sky" takes an out-and-back route through the Colorado Rockies. The run's low point is 9,200 feet; its high point is Hope Pass, with an elevation of12,600 feet.

2013 Ironman Lake Placid - RESULTS, Live Coverage, Event Details, & More

Lake Placid is the focus of the triathlon world on July 28th, when Ironman Lake Placid (IMLP) begins at 6:20 a.m. with the pro race. The transition opens at 4:30.

Find all the information about the event at the official Ironman Lake Placid website, and follow live coverage here. Live video coverage starts at 6:20 a.m., and you have the choice of viewing four different cameras: finish line, transition 1, transition 2, and swim exit.

The live coverage site says that rain is forecast for Sunday, but also notes that weather patterns in the area are changeable, so it's possible the conditions could clear up.

2013 Ironman Coeur d'Alene: Results & Live Coverage

Sunday, June 23rd is the day for the 2013 Ironman Coeur d'Alene. You'll find live coverage here (assume the event is still taking place when you visit the site) and results here. The live feed includes views from the finish line as well as the swim exit and transition areas, and there's a live blog to keep you updated on the minute-by-minute happenings.

For the Ironman Coeur d'Alene results, you can view all results, or narrow it down to males or female, pros or amateurs, and other criteria. You can also search for particular athletes by name or bib number.

2013 Fairfield Half Marathon - Results Page

Congrats to all runners who gutted out the 2013 Fairfield Half in some very warm and muggy conditions. You'll find the Fairfield Half results page here. I've heard reports that a number of runners went down during the race; we hope that they will all be fine once they receive some fluids and medical attention. It's nasty weather out there folks, hydrate and run smart!

2013 Oakley New York Mini: Race Results

Congrats to all the women (and girls) running in today's Oakley New York Mini 10K for women; you'll find race results here. As usual, you can search results by last name, bib number, etc., or field the overall results, or narrow the results down by age group, state, etc.

After a brutally windy and rainy day and night on Friday, the skies cleared up for the Oakley New York Mini 10K on Saturday morning, and the sun even made an appearance. Besides the many thousands of everyday recreational runners, the New York Mini was led by a few elite professional runners, including Steph Rothstein Bruce.

2013 Spring Lake 5: Race Results

It didn't feel anything like summer at the Jersey Shore this morning, but nevertheless the Spring Lake 5 was held, and you can find the results here.

Check out the leaderboard, or search for your stats (or those of other runners) by entering the name or bib number. Andrew Brodeur of Brick, NJ won the overall competition with a time of 24:53.54, while Amanda Marino of Jackson took the women's division in 27:32.53.

2013 Brooklyn Half Marathon: Race Results

For once the Brooklyn Half Marathon was blessed with weather that was not all hot and sticky, and runners had overcast (if humid) conditions—see the results from today's 2013 Brooklyn Half Marathon.

This has become the New York Road Runners Club's biggest race outside of the NYC Marathon, with more than 25,000 participants divided into two waves.

Congratulations to all finishers! Despite the large crowds and increased security procedures after the Boston Marathon, this year's Brooklyn Half seemed to run smoothly.

2013 Boston Marathon: Searchable Results

In light of the unbelievable events that took place soon after the four-hour mark at Monday's Boston Marathon, it almost seems trivial to post results. But since thousands of people put countless hours preparing for the race (and raising money for charity), and the majority of them finished the race, here is the link to 2013 searchable Boston Marathon results.

The Boston Athletic Association placed a short message on its website (baa.org), which in part says that additional information will be provided on the organization's Facebook page, facebook.com/thebostonmarathon. Their Twitter page, twitter.com/bostonmarathon, will probably have updates tomorrow as well.

The front pages of tomorrow's papers should have featured photos and stories showing the winners:  Lelisa Desisa of Ethiopia winning the men's race in 2:10:22, and Kenya's Rita Jeptoo capturing the women's division in 2:26:25. Instead, they will be showing images of a horrific crime scene.

It's very sad to see a senseless act take attention away from a great effort by the winners. And, by the way, a very good day for American distance running. Even with some big names having to skip Boston because of injury, the U.S. had some strong top-ten finishes: Jason Hartmann fourth, Daniel Tapia ninth, and Craig Leon tenth in the men's competition, and Shalane Flanagan fourth and Kara Goucher sixth in the women's race. Let's hope that all those injured make full recoveries ... and that the people behind this atrocious crime are caught and brought to justice.

Top elite athletes and thousands of everyday runners will run through the streets of Manhattan on Sunday at the 2013 NYC Half Marathon. In all, 15,000 runners will run the course from Central Park south through midtown, Chelsea, and other neighborhoods, and finishing at the historic South Street Seaport (see the NYC Half Marathon course map here in PDF format).

2013 NYCRuns Central Park Marathon & Half Marathon: Race Results

The ever-expanding NYCRuns introduced another race into the City's running history last weekend with the Central Park Marathon and Half Marathon, and you can find the results below.

The group created the immensely popular Brooklyn Marathon and has added a number of other races of varying sizes and distances in the NYC metro area. With the Central Park Marathon, it helped fill the void left by the cancellation of November's New York City Marathon with a 26.2 race held entirely in Central Park's borders (the same way the NYC Marathon began). And this event added a half marathon to boot. (I wanted to run the latter, but unfortunately urgent family business had me out of town.)

2013 Spring Lake 5 Registration Opens Feb. 2nd

It may not feel like summer at the Jersey Shore right now, but nevertheless, registration for the Spring Lake Five opens this week, on Feb. 2nd. The annual start-of-summer race and party takes place, as always, on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend, which this year falls on May 25th. The race starts at 8:30 a.m.; see full Spring Lake Five details here.

Registration for the race begins on Feb. 2nd at 5 a.m. Eastern time (yes, you read that right), so set your alarm, go to the Spring Lake Five registration page and be ready to enter your information.

The Spring Lake Five is the inaugural event of the annual Jersey Shore Golden Grand Prix, which includes the Belmar 5 and the Sheehan Classic in Red Bank, among others.

NYCRuns Holds the First Central Park Marathon on Feb. 24th

The group that brought you the Brooklyn Marathon and many other races has another new event planned for next month: the inaugural Central Park Marathon and Half Marathon. Like the original running of the New York City Marathon, the race will take place entirely in the confines of Central Park.

Another new marathon grows in NYC: the Central Park Marathon.

The race, whose date had been in flux when it was first announced, is now set for Feb. 24th at 8 a.m. and a half marathon option had been added. The cost for the races is $85 for the full marathon and $60 for the half.

As the site notes, "The USATF Certified Boston Qualifying race will comprise 5 loops of the park crossing the 102nd St. transverse" for the marathon (you'll find a PDF of the map here). See the Half Marathon map here. It also says the race is capped at 1,500 runners (for the full marathon, I'd guess) but may be expanded.

Race goodies include a medal, a hoodie, and "the usual great NYCRUNS post-race meal." (Again, I'm guessing these are perks for doing the full marathon).

A February marathon in NYC is of course an iffy proposition in terms of weather, as this winter is already showing. But the inaugural Central Park Marathon should have no problem filling up. If you're interested in running it, you might want to act soon.
