One of the highlights of the running year in New York City, and of New Year's Eve in the Big Apple, is the Midnight Run in Central Park. Sponsored by the New York Road Runners Club, the four-mile fun run steps off at midnight with participants dressed in a wide array of zany costumes portraying just about every theme you can imagine.

The run is just the culmination of a night of fun in the Park, though. The festivities begin at 10 p.m. with a DJ spinning tunes to dance to, so you can limber up your muscles before the run. There's a costume parade and contest at 11 p.m., followed by the race, accompanied by fireworks, at 12 Midnight.

The Central Park Midnight Run is not only a fun way to end one year and start the next, but lets you begin your New Year's resolution for a healthier lifestyle before anyone else.

See the Midnight Run Web page for details on how to sign up for the race.

Paula Radcliffe Blows Away Field to Win 2008 New York Marathon

Paula Radcliffe of Great Britain has won the 2008 New York City Marathon, capturing the title for the third time. Radcliffe led the race from the starting gun and finished with a time of 2:23:56.

New York native Kara Goucher, running in her first marathon, finished in third place. Ludmilla Petrova of Russia finished second and was close to the Briton for much of the race, but Radcliffe opened up distance from Petrova with a 5:12 mile late in the race.

Radcliffe made her intention to win clear from the start, taking the lead at the very beginning and staying at the front of the pack the entire race. Goucher, who is originally from Queens, had dropped out of the lead pack of five runners and appeared to be in trouble, but two other elite runners in that pack fell away, and Goucher found herself in third place, although more than six seconds behind Radcliffe's pace.

Goucher competed for the U.S. in the 2008 Olympics in both the 10,000 and 5,000 meters. She was born in New York but moved to Minnesota when she was four years old. Her father died in a car accident in New York, and the city has always been special to her. Kara Goucher didn't medal in either of her Olympic races in Beijing, so being on the medal stand in New York is certainly redemption for her, and a special personal moment for her as well.

Kara Goucher has a winning connection to New York as well: her coach is Alberto Salazar, a three-time winner of the New York Marathon.

The New York Daily News had a nice story on Kara Goucher's New York homecoming.

2008 Tunnel to Towers Run in New York City

UPDATE: Monday 9:45 p.m.: 2008 Tunnel to Towers race results are now posted at: http://results.active.com/pages/searchform.jsp?rsID=70345

- - - - -
The annual Tunnel to Towers Run took place in New York City Sunday, starting in Brooklyn and going to Manhattan through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel. You can find information and race results at the official Tunnel to Towers Run Web site. I ran the race last year, and it's a unique event.

The race is in honor of NYC firefighter Stephen Siller, who was off duty on 9/11/01 when he heard of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. He headed to his firehouse to get his gear and head for the fire, and since all tunnels and bridges were closed to traffic after the attacks, Siller ran through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel and to the World Trade Center... wearing his full firefighter gear.

Sadly, Stephen Siller was one of the 343 NYC fireman to lose his life when the twin towers collapsed. But the Siller family has turned this tragedy that honors his memory and provides funds for a number of charities, including burn centers in New York and across the country; the New York Foundling Hospital; education funds for the children of fallen soldiers; and even the sufferers of Hurricane Katrina.

Besides the race, the Tunnel to Towers Run concludes with a big outdoor party near the finish line, with free food, live entertainment, and lots more.

If you're a runner who'll be in New York the last weekend in September, this is quite a unique race to run in.

The Nike Human Race - Give Your Results and Reactions

I've gotten an unprecedented amount of traffic to and comments on my post about running in the New York edition of the Nike Human Race. Most of the comments had the same reaction as I did to the Randall's Island course... namely, that it was congested and just plain awful.

Who out there ran the Nike Human Race in the other 26 cities? What was your experience with the race? Was the course well planned and runner friendly?

To answer one of the comments about the New York Human Race, it was not a New York Road Runners Club event, as far as I can tell. The NYRR promoted the race on its site, but clicking on a link for the race led you straight to Nike's site for the Human Race. So I don't think NYRR can be blamed for the poorly planned course.

If you ran the Nike Human Race at any of the 26 cities, or if you ran it on your own wherever you are, let us know your experiences. Thanks...

Nike Human Race - Finding Results and Winners

The first-ever worldwide Nike Human Race is complete (or still in progress in some places), and Nike is beginning to post the results. You can find the Nike Human Race results by city on an interactive map. The site also offers a leaderboard showing the fastest times for all the Nike Human Race events... that's races in 26 cities around the world.

As of midnight eastern time, the map shows "awaiting results" for the race I ran in, the New York City event. The weather was beautiful, the post-race concert by the All-American Rejects was fun, and the final lap inside Icahn Stadium at Randall's Island was a great way to finish.

The race course itself, however, was abysmal... probably the worst course I've ever experienced in nearly 30 years of running races. Randall's Island is not a huge island, making it necessary for runners to complete two loops of the course. Not a problem with a decent course, but this one was awful. In many places the course was narrowed too much by fences, and it had the runners going over construction areas with potentially tricky footing.

The narrow course became even more narrow when the race staff asked (politely) runners to stay to the left so that front runners making their second loop could get by.

At one point the runners had to run over a short bridge over a stream that was only wide enough for four or five people running abreast. Imagine hundreds of people trying to cross that bridge at once, with thousands just behind them, and it's easy to understand why I and many other runners were literally standing in place for several minutes until I could cross the bridge.

If the Nike Human Race is to be run again in New York City, a major course (and/or location) redesign is absolutely necessary.

One-Million Runners Set to Run the Nike Plus Human Race

You can find out all the details at the link above, and register to take part in the Nike Plus Human Race. In New York City, the race will start at 6 p.m. on Randall's Island, just east of Manhattan.

Kenenisa Bekele Keeps Olympic 10,000 Meters Crown

Ethiopian Kenenisa Bekele retained his Olympic title in the 10,000 meters, relying on a sprint to pull away from countrymen Sileshi Sihine. Bekele's time was 27:01.17. Micah Kogo of Kenya came in third for the bronze medal. Bekele, who set the world record for the distance in 2005, did not best that time today, but he did set a new Olympic record, beating the record he set in Athens in 2004.

(Official men's 10,000 meter final results.)

Bekele and Sihine took a victory lap with a third Ethiopian, running legend Haile Gebrselassie. Although Gebrselassie finished only sixth, his performance in this race helped set the pace for his compatriots. Gebrselassie was going for his third gold medal in the distance: he took gold in the 10,000 meters at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996 and the Sydney games in 2000.

Gebrselassie had originally planned on competing in the marathon (he holds the world record) as well as the 10,000. But he suffers from asthma and scratched the marathon from his plans due to concerns over the effects of Beijing's air pollution.

Surprisingly, the 35-year-old Gebrselassie said that Beijing would not be his last Olympics; he said he plans to run in 2012 in London, though he's not yet decided whether he will attempt the 10,000 or the marathon.

The top American in the 10,000 meters was Galen Rupp in 13th place at 27:36.99, a season's best for him.

Constantina Tomescu Dita of Romania Wins 2008 Olympic Women's Marathon

38-year-old Romanian Constantina Tomescu Dita literally ran away with the Beijing Olympics women's marathon on Sunday (Saturday night in the West), finishing more than one minute ahead of the second place finisher.

Tomescu Dita pulled away with more than 10 miles to go, building a lead that a seven-runner pack behind her was unable to challenge at all. For much of the last few miles two Kenyans and two Chinese runners were battling for the silver and bronze. In the end, it was Catherine Nedereba of Kenya, one of today's most successful female marathoners, taking the silver and Chunxiu Zhou of China taking the bronze. The Chinese faithful were thrilled to see Zhou win a medal, and to see her compatriot Xiaolin Zhu finish fourth.

(You can find the complete Olympic women's marathon finish list here.

British marathoner Paula Radcliffe had another unsuccessful Olympic experience: she stopped several times but finished, visibly in pain.

The top American finisher was Blake Russell in 27th. Deena Kastor, the bronze medalist in Athens, did not finish.

2008 San Francisco Marathon - This Sunday, August 3rd

Get the lowdown on this scenic race at the official San Francisco Marathon Web site. The race has also put together a handy San Francisco Marathon Guide in PDF format.

Check the site for last-minute instructions, picking up shirts and bib numbers, the schedule for marathon weekend, the San Francisco Marathon Expo, post-race entertainment (including the barbecue), and more.

You can find some videos taken along the San Francisco Marathon course from a local SF blog, which were apparently originally on a newspaper's Web site.

The events also including a Half Marathon (running in two different halves), a 5K run and walk, and a "progressive marathon," in which participants "run or walk 26.2 miles over a period of weeks or months, finishing their final 3.1 miles on Race Day in either the 5K."

Should be a great weekend in Frisco.

The 2008 Spring Lake 5 was held May 24th, and the results page is up here.

NOTE: The site says these are unofficial results, and the men's results in particular seem to be incomplete (I ran the race with several friends, and none of us are listed in the race results). This might be because apparently the first male finisher was wearing a women's bib number, the site says.

Check the link above later and with any luck the results will be made final soon.

Boston Marathon Results: Cheruiyot, Tune Take Titles

To no one's surprise, two Africans took the men's and women's titles at the 2008 Boston Marathon. But the women's race came down to a thrilling finish, and the winner was a bit of a surprise.

The victor in the men's division was a familiar face: Robert K. Cheruiyot of Kenya is the defending champion, and is looking for his fourth Boston Marathon title. Cheruiyot had an official time of 2:07:46, which is the sixth fastest time in Boston history.

For the women, Dire Tune was the victor, having the final winning kick in a thrilling sprint to the finish. She and second-place finisher Alevtina Biktimirova of Russia were running side by side with 400 meters to go, with the Russian ending up with a finish time only two seconds behind that of Tune.

Dire Tune becomes only the second Ethiopian woman to win the Boston Marathon. Her time was 2:25:25.

Two American runners finished in the top 20 in both the men's and women's fields of the 112th Boston Marathon. Nicholas A. Arciniaga came in 10th in 2:16:13, while Jason D. Schoener was 14th in 2:19:22.

On the women's side, Ashley A. Anklam had a time of 2:48:43 to finish in 15th place, less than a minute ahead of the second American women, Kim S. Duclos (16th place) in 2:49:31.

Autopsy: Ryan Shay Died of Irregular Heartbeat from Enlarged Heart

The autopsy has finally been released for Ryan Shay, the marathon runner who died during the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials in New York City last November. The Associated Press is reporting that Shay "died of an irregular heartbeat due to an enlarged heart" and also had previous scarring whose cause couldn't be determined.

LetsRun.com has a short piece on the story that seems to have a direct quote from the New York City medical examiner's office on the cause of death, by way of Shay's father: "Cardiac arrhythmia due to cardiac hypertrophy with patchy fibrosis of undetermined etiology. Natural Causes."

The spokeswoman put it in layman's terms in a phone conversation with Shay's father, according to the Detroit Free Press:

“The heartbeat went into an irregular rhythm due to an enlarged heart with old scars,” Ellen Borakove, public affairs director for the office of the chief medical examiner, told the Free Press in a phone interview. “It’s an unknown source — we’re not able to identify what caused the scaring. “It’s a natural-cause death.”

Shay was diagnosed with an enlarged heart at age 14, but it's not unusual for athletes to have such enlargement. There has been more attention paid to this subject in recent years as there have been a number of high-profile sudden deaths of elite athletes and former athletes, including Army women's basketball coach Maggie Dixon two years ago.

LetsRun.com says that the full report will be released only to the family.

Catalina Marathon - A Unique Trail Marathon on an Island

Taking place on Catalina Island off the coast of California, the Catalina Marathon sounds like a unique experience. USA Today picked it as one of the "10 best winter marathons," while Runner's World called it the "#1 off-road marathon in the world."

The 2008 Catalina Marathon takes place March 15th, and more than 23 miles of the race will be run on trails. The official Web site calls it a "hilly, challenging" run, with much of the course going through the interior of the island where few people have ventured. Man Dies After Completing Little Rock Marathon

Some sad news to report on this busy day of marathoning: A 27-year-old man died after running today's Little Rock Marathon. The runner, identified as Adam Nickel of Madison, Wisconsin, was pronounced dead Sunday near the finish line.

Mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and defibrillation were performed, but Nickel could not be revived. He was pronounced dead after being transported to the University of Arkansas hospital, according to the race's medical director, who said that he died in the emergency department. Medical staff were unable to detect a cardiac rhythm.

This is the first death in the six years of the Little Rock Marathon. Condolences to Mr. Nickel's family and loved ones. Considering how grueling a marathon is, it's fortunate that such sad events occur so rarely, especially when you realize how many hundreds of thousands of people run marathons each year. It remains to be seen what the cause of this untimely death was.

Finding Running Routes - Run.com, USATF, and Other Choices

A Web site I've just become aware of, Run.com, calls itself "The best online resource for where to run. Great running routes and run maps for countries and cities around the world." Unfortunately, the site is not accessible right now (Saturday afternoon), perhaps because it it getting so much traffic.

Another Web site called MapMyRun.com lets you map your own runs, look up runs that others have mapped, and log your training. I haven't tried it, but it looks easy to use and helpful.

USA Track and Field has a feature on its Web site called America's Running Routes that lets you map and share your own running courses, and look up ones that other people have posted. This can be a handy feature if, like me, you're often visiting out-of-town friends and relatives and are looking for good running routes of various distances.

The Race to Robie Creek: Tough, Rugged, Full

The 2008 Race to Robie Creek will be held April 19th, but it's already full. However the "Hot Topics" page at the Robie Creek Web site notes that it's OK for registrants to sell their entries to other people.

The Race to Robie Creek takes place in Boise, Idaho, and calls itself "The Toughest Half Marathon in the Northwest."

You'll also want to read the race's FAQ page. It answers all the questions you might have about the race, such as:
How tough is the race, really?
What's the course elevation?
Are there really no iPods allowed?
Where do I pick up my race chip?

The Columbus, Ohio "Last Chance for Boston" Marathon

The name says it all: the "Last Chance for Boston" Marathon claims to be the last marathon that will enable you to qualify for the Boston Marathon. The marathon takes place on February 17th, and if you're a real procrastinator you'll be glad to know that registration is open through the morning of the race! (Note: online registration closes the day before the race, Saturday the 16th, at 8 a.m.)

The marathon features a fast, flat USATF-certified course. The event also features a half marathon, 10K, and 5K, but let's face it, most of the entrants will be trying to get in under the wire to qualify for Boston.

Columbus, Ohio in February may not be everyone's idea of a perfect marathon spot, but if you want to qualify for the big Patriot's Day race, this is apparently the place to be. And hey, Boston in April can be pretty cold, windy, and raw, so who knows, the weather in Columbus this weekend might even be better than that at the Boston Marathon.

2008 Myrtle Beach Marathon Weekend Feb. 14-17

Named US USA Today as one of its "10 great places to warm up to a winter marathon," the Myrtle Beach Marathon will take place this weekend, Feb. 14th-17th.

While the 2008 Bi-Lo Myrtle Beach Marathon is the marquee race of the weekend, the events include a half marathon, marathon relay, 5K, fun run, bicycle ride, and of course a post-race party. As a popular vacation spot, Myrtle Beach has plenty of good restaurants for pre-race carbo loading and post-race chowdowns.

The Myrtle Beach Marathon, half marathon, and marathon relay are sold out; there may still be time to enter the 5K and the other events. See the race Web site for details.

2008 Surf City Marathon and Half, Huntington, California

Start off Super Bowl Sunday with a marathon along the beautiful California shoreline... the 2008 Surf City Marathon and Half Marathon take place Sunday, Feb. 3rd in Huntington, California. Formerly called the Pacific Shoreline Marathon, this race definitely capitalizes on the Surf City/Beach Boys tie-in, with restored "Woody" cars and lifeguard vehicles and surfboards leading the runners from the starting line. With the Beach Boys playing in the background, of course.

The course goes by Huntington Beach and its pier and through Huntington Central Park, and there are bands playing surf music along the course. Sounds like fun, and apparently a lot of people agree: the race is closed after reaching 16,000 entrants, its largest field ever.

Here you'll find a PDF version of the course map of the 2008 Surf City Marathon and Half Marathon.

2008 Arizona Desert Classic Marathon

"Spirit of the Marathon" Screenings Jan. 24th

I don't know how I missed this, but the movie "Spirit of the Marathon" is being screened in a number of cities in the U.S. tonight, January 24th. I've never heard of it before... wonder how I missed hearing of it?

"Spirit of the Marathon" sounds like a very interesting movie, following several people of very different backgrounds as they prepare to run in the Chicago marathon. There are elite athletes like Deena Kastor (Deena Drossin, before she got married), as well as some first-time marathoners and a man in his seventies.

This one-night-only screening sounds like an odd idea, although maybe it's a way to get some publicity before a DVD release. An article in the Los Angeles Times says there will be an encore screening of "Spirit of the Marathon" on February 21st.

There's a runners expo taking place from Friday to Sunday.
